MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM with Android Nougat 7.0 Complete Review

MIUI 2B9 300x169 - MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM with Android Nougat 7.0 Complete Review
Howdy? As you are reading this post the chances are, you haven’t got the MIUI 9 Stable update yet.
Or you’ve chosen not to upgrade your phone.
Whatever is the situation!
Here in this post, I’ll tell you about my complete experience with this latest update by MIUI Team.
The MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM started rolling out on 2nd November 2017 after the big revelation day by Xiaomi India.
At the same day, they further introduced their new series of phones which is Redmi Y. As per declaration, The “Y” here represents the Youth.
They stated that this series will be selfie-focused and revealed their brand new devices of this series, Redmi Y1, and Redmi Y1 Lite. If you are appealing to these devices, refer to my complete review for Redmi Y1 Lite, here.

There’s no suspense that the Redmi Y series will receive the MIUI 9 update sooner than the older Xiaomi devices.

Well thankfully, I’m using Redmi Note 4 which is the No. 1 Selling smartphone in India.
So they could not ignore us, and this phone was placed in the initial batch to receive the MIUI 9 OTA Updates.
But, They pushed their OTA Updates in many batches. So it took 6 and a half day for me to get the MIUI Global Stable update for my Redmi Note 4.
My earlier version of the MIUI was 8.5.8 Global Stable ROM, running on Android Nougat 7.0.
There’s no doubt that I hoped for at least Android 7.1 but they’ve disappointed us.
The update was only 266 MB, So I had already guessed that there’as no update to the Android version. ‘And I was right’
Even though, there was a long list in the changelog. Here’s the screenshot of the updater app:

While the update size was only 266 MB, it took a long time to execute the process and reboot the device. It went so long that I was thinking, I might have broken the device.
But it rebooted successfully with the latest MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM v9.0.3.0.
As I told you above, It is still the Android Nougat 7.0 while the Redmi Y1 series is coming with Android Nougat 7.1 pre-installed.
Let’s have a look at the home screen after upgrading to MIUI 9 on Redmi Note 4:

As we’ll move on to the features and changelogs now, Let’s first talk about the most awaited feature of the MIUI 9 and the most prominent feature of Android 7.0 or above.
You might have already heard about it. It’s the Split-Screen feature.

The Split-Screen Feature

The Stock Android already had this feature with their Nougat update.
But due to customizations, it is not available in the MIUI 8, even if you are on Android Nougat.
Anyhow, they’ve learned that people are crazy about this unique feature of the Stock Android. And they too brought it to the MIUI 9.

What is the Split-Screen feature?

The Split-Screen feature allows you to use two apps at the same time on the same screen.
For example,
You can browse the internet on the top of the screen while chatting with friends on WhatsApp at the bottom of the screen. Or…
You can read your favorite stories on Medium while chatting on Allo. Or anything else… ‘Together at the same time, on the same screen‘.

The only requirement is that the app should also uphold this feature. And the good news is, most of the apps already support the split-screen feature.
Now let me explain how to use this feature in MIUI 9…

How to use the Split-Screen feature?

Step 1: Open the apps that you want to use simultaneously. I’m using the Medium app and Google Allo for example.
Step 2: Now go to ‘Recents’ by pressing the Recent button on the left of the phone (by default setting). The recent button is marked with 3 lines.
Step 3: Now click on “Split screen” on the recent screen. See the screenshot below for example:

Step 4: Now drag any of the apps above the screen as shown below:

Step 5: Now tap on the second app that you want to use simultaneously. See the screenshot below:
Tap 2Bon 2Bother 2Bapp 181x300 - MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM with Android Nougat 7.0 Complete Review
You can also exit if you have done it accidentally. To exit split screen before tapping on the second app you can click on the exit button shown on the screen. See the screenshot above.
After tapping on the second app, you can use both the apps together on the same screen.
You can also resize the window of the app by dragging the small button in-between the split screen. See the screenshot below:

Did you notice? I also resized the window to show you the example.
Now, What about the situation when you want to put the second app on the above screen and vice-versa?
Well, In the stock android it is still a lengthy process. You need to exit the split screen then repeat the steps above.
But in MIUI 9, it is very simple. So they also did some show off at the launching event.
You just need to double-tap on the button shown in the screenshot above, and the apps will switch their places. Big relief, right?

Now let’s move on to the other features and changelogs…

Lightning Fast

The Xiaomi or MIUI Team claims to have the fastest MIUI ever which is almost equal to the stock android.
I don’t have anything to measure that but let’s talk about my experience.
Yes, it is fast. Faster than MIUI 8 for sure! But I can’t say the same when it comes to stock android. No doubt that the stock android is still faster than MIUI 9 and it is quite logical.
While they claim to have the fastest ever UI, you can’t really feel them in reality.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m comparing it to the stock android in real life experience. Yet, the tests performed by the MIUI Team shows that the MIUI 9 saves an exceptional amount of time.
If you really care about it, you can watch the videos on YouTube. But if you’ll ask me, most of them are useless.
So to conclude, I would say, Yes it the fastest Android Skin I’ve ever used but you can’t really differentiate it with the stock android in real life experience.

Better Home Screen Management

This is the 2nd biggest improvement in MIUI after the speedy performance. The home screen editing is also the simpler than ever.
Now you can move multiple apps together by selecting them. And you also get a preview of all the existing screens at the bottom of the screen.
You can move the selected apps without passing all the existing screens one by one. Just select the apps and drag it to any of the screen previews at the bottom.
For me, It’s the most beautiful feature of the MIUI 9.
You can also choose any of the screens in the editing mode and make that the default home screen. How good is that?

The Improved Calendar App

The look of the calendar app is still the same but now it has some more features included such as Daily Horoscope, Cricket News etc.
The new calendar also features Football Cards which shows details of the major international football matches.
The calendar has also updated their holiday list for all the countries and now it also shows brief information about them if you tap on the holiday list.
Likewise, Google does with its Google Doodle, MIUI does it with its calendar.
If you will check the day on the calendar it will also show something interesting about the day and you can also read a brief about them.
Here’s how all these things look like:

You can manage your subscriptions anytime from the calendar app. You can also rearrange or reorder them as you want. Here’s the screenshot of the calendar subscription management screen:

That’s all the highlights of the MIUI 9. There are some more cool things to show you but I haven’t made any video for the Global Stable ROM yet.
But you can watch my MIUI 9 beta ROM review on YouTube here (In Hindi):
